Gum contouring is a cosmetic method that is used to treat people with a ‘gummy smile’; this is when the teeth are covered by gum tissue, meaning that a large portion of gum is visible when the person smiles. Gummy smiles do not contribute to any dental health problems but they often make the person’s teeth look smaller and more crooked, which can make the appearance of their smile look less attractive. Feeling self-conscious about your smile can affect your confidence and hold you back in social situations.

    How does gum contouring work?

During the procedure, the dentist will use either a scalpel or a laser to gently trim away very tiny pieces of gum tissue to increase the visible portion of the front teeth. Increasingly, lasers are being used, rather than scalpels as this eradicates the need for making incisions in the gum line; this makes recovery faster and reduces the risk of infection. The results of the procedure are usually visible straight away and healing is very quick.

    Is the procedure painful?

Although it may seem a little daunting, gum contouring is not a painful procedure. Many patients have local anaesthetic before the procedure and this helps to numb the gum and prevent pain.

Is gum contouring available on the NHS?

Gum contouring isn’t an essential treatment so it is not available on the NHS.

How much does gum contouring cost?

There are many dentists in essex that can offer this service and it is relatively cheap; patients should expect to pay around £250 for laser treatment and £150 for treatment using a scalpel.
